Living in the Philippines for as long as I have, you tend to view current events here with a sense of humor. This is a must for any Expat here as things can be so frustrating that, without a sense of humor, you may end up having a stroke! Take, for example, the latest round of Senate Hearings on the ill-fated ZTE-Broadband-Deal between the Government of China and The Philippines.
Now, here's a guy (a mouse) who would probably have a hard time speaking up against anyone much less the government structure. Jun Lozada, after finding out he would be the next target for questioning in the ZTE scandal, flew (fled) to Hong Kong hoping those in the Senate would somehow forget about him. Granted, his testimony on the Broadband deal was devoid of any bombshells but, what the Senate and public at large found most shocking was the events which took place upon his arival at Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA).
For those who have not heard the story, I'll post it later or you can "Google" it. In any case, here's my thinking on it...
If they (meaning the thugs who snatched him from NAIA, drove him from Libis to Cavite and back to his home after six hours claiming "counter-surveillance") would have left him alone, left him to be retrieved by the Senate Seargent of Arms, all of this would have been a non-issue. However, the idiot who ordered the snatch only made matters worse by scaring Mr. Lozada shitless and thinking if he ever made it home alive that the only recourse to ensure his survival would be to spill the beans as soon as possible. So, instead of boring testiomny basically being no different from what we've heard before, the hearing turned into a study of just how stupid some leaders of government really are.
Just a thought guys... Sometimes its better to leave well enough alone.
